WATERTOWN,, S.D.–Watertown Fire Rescue was called out Sunday afternoon to a controlled burn that got out of control.

The call came in around 5 p.m. of a field on fire north of Watertown in the area of 167th Street and 455th Avenue.

That’s where a landowner burning brush and a tree pile saw the flames escape their boundaries, catching a corn stubble field on fire.

When crews arrived on scene, they were met with a 100 foot by 50 foot fire that was encroaching on shelter belts on two sides.

The firefighters gained control of the fire before it was able to take hold in the shelterbelts or make a run across the corn stubble field.

Crews were on scene for about 35 minutes before handing the property back over to the landowner.
