Bizarre pursuit in Brookings County ends with man’s arrest
BROOKINGS, S.D.–A bizarre slow speed pursuit was conducted Sunday afternoon by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Department.
It began just south of Brookings when dispatch received reports of a payloader driving into oncoming traffic and stopping in the middle of 472nd Avenue near 216th Street.
When deputies located the payloader, they attempted to stop it, but the driver refused to pull over.
While the pursuit was ongoing, the owner of the payloader called authorities to report that it had been stolen from a Brookings business.
Deputies continued to attempt to stop the payloader as it drove through a trailer court.
The driver eventually reached a dead end and attempted to turn around in a residential yard. That’s when the payloader struck a mobile home and pushed a shed before the driver fled on foot.
Deputies chased down 36 year-old Reco Jones of Brookings and arrested him for Grand Theft, Possesion of a Stolen Vehicle, Tresspassing, Intentional Damage to Property, Driving Under Suspension, Obstructing, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and Aggravated Eluding.
He was jailed in Brookings on $2,500 cash bond.
