PIERRE, S.D.–Authorities have identified the person killed in a single engine airplane crash northwest of Pierre Monday afternoon.

The Hughes County Sheriff’s Office says 76 year-old Hugh Alexander of Steamboat Spings, Colorado was klled when the plane crashed a mile north of Pierre, and a half-mile west of Highway 1804.

Alexander was a passenger in the plane that was being piloted by 59 year-old Eric Meyer of Steamboat Springs.

Meyer radioed air traffic control after leaving the Pierre airport that he was experiencing engine failure and would be returning to the airport, but the plane never made it back.

Meyer was treated at a Pierre hospital and has since been released.
