SAN FRANCISCO, Ca.–Watertown High School graduate Spencer Waege‘s bid to make a National Football League roster took a detour over the weekend.

The San Francisco 49’ers announced five roster cuts Sunday, as teams work their way down to the 53-player opening day roster which has to be set by Tuesday.

One of those cuts was Waege, a defensive lineman who signed with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent.

Waege, who played collegiately at North Dakota State (NDSU), will now try to catch on with another team through a waiver claim, possibly as a practice squad member, as teams finalize their rosters.

Practice squads will be capped at 16 players this season.

Over the weekend, Waege’s former teammate at NDSU, quarterback Trey Lance of Marshall, Minnesota, was traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2024 fourth round draft pick.
