WATERTOWN, S.D.—Just as the Watertown City Council was about to enter serious discussions about building a new ice arena in town, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country.

That has certainly delayed conversations about the project, but it hasn’t killed it….

Watertown Mayor Sarah Caron says the main question remains money. How much will it cost to build a new arena, and where will that money come from…

The city has some money set aside to build a new ice arena, but the mayor says it’s not nearly enough…

They’ll be able to secure some funding through naming rights deals, but not enough to bridge the gap between what they have, and what they’ll need..…

As for potential sites, the mayor says the former Metz Bakery property on the west edge of downtown is still a possibility.
