WATERTOWN, S.D.–The Watertown School Board met today (Monday), and agreed to take a big first step in athletic facility upgrades in the school district.

They approved Phase One of a plan that includes a total rebuild of the track at Allen Mitchell Field, and a new artificial turf football field inside the track.

Phase One has a $3.9 million price tag. Superintendent Jeff Danielsen tells KWAT News  it’s money they have on hand, specifically for this kind of project….

Danielsen says Arrows varsity football games will be held at Watertown Stadium for at least another season, because Phase One at Allen Mitchell Field does not include things like bathrooms, a ticket booth, and bleachers to seat 3,000 people. That would come in Phase Two….

Danielsen says getting Phase One approved made for a good day for the school district…

School Board member Stuart Stein spoke in support of Phase One……

Construction work at Allen Mitchell Field will begin within a week, so people who use the track for walking will lose out on that opportunity the rest of the summer.

Mammoth Sports Construction of Sioux Falls is the general contractor.
