WATERTOWN, S.D.–On a 6-1 vote Monday night, the Watertown City Council annexed nearly 19 acres of land west of North Lake Drive into the city, and gave that land a zoning designation of C-L Lake Commercial.

The property adjacent to Lake Kampeska is known as the Ruesink-Stofferahn Addition.

Councilman Bruce Buhler was a recluctant “yes” vote….

Councilman Mike Danforth….

Ward E Councilman Lynn Jurrens represents lake property owners on the council. He voted no, citing concern for what this zoning designation could mean down the road…..

Prior to the vote on annexing the land, there was a lengthy discussion, some two and a half hours worth, on what the permitted and conditional uses should be around Lake Kampeska on property that’s designated commercial lake district.

The conversation broached the appropriateness of restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores and campgrounds close to residential areas.

Councilman Lynn Jurrens says when it comes to commercial development on Kampeska, he doesn’t want to see it become another Lake Okoboji…..
