Jackley argues to keep South Dakota’s death penalty on the books  (Audio)

PIERRE, S.D.–After an hour of emotional testimony on both sides, a Senate committee killed a bill that would have ended the death penaltyas a sentencing option in South Dakota.

The Senate Judiciary Committee defeated the bill on a 4-3 vote.

Lynette Johnson, the widow of murdered prison guard R.J. Johnson, showed a photo of her husband after the deadly beating he sustained. She also showed Johnson’s watch that absorbed some of the blows from a lead pipe from two prisoners who were trying to escape.

R.J. Johnson was murdered at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls in 2011.
