Crashes near Canton, Marty leave two people dead

CANTON, S.D. – One person died and another person was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash late Saturday night seven miles west of Canton.

Names of the two people involved have not yet been released pending notification of family members.

The Highway Patrol says a Saturn car was southbound on South Dakota Highway 115. As it entered the intersection with U.S. Highway 18, it collided with a Subaru Forester that was eastbound on U.S. Highway 18.

The 40-year-old female driver of the Subaru was dead at the scene.

The 57-year-old man driving the Saturn had to be extricated from the vehicle. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital.

Meanwhile, one person died early Sunday morning in a vehicle-pedestrian crash five miles east of Marty, South Dakota.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 42-year-old man was walking east on South Dakota Highway 46 when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. The pedestrian was dead at the scene.

The driver and vehicle involved have not yet been identified.

The accident was reported just before five o’clock Sunday morning.
