Bicyclist dies of injuries sustained in Interstate 29 crash

BROOKINGS, S.D. – A 53-year-old man from Winnipeg has died from injuries sustained last Thursday in a vehicle-bicycle crash 17 miles north of Brookings.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says fifty three year-old Jean-Pierre Petit was riding his bicycle southbound along the fogline of Interstate 29 when he was struck by a southbound truck.
Petit, who was wearing a helmet, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital. He died there on Monday.
The driver of the truck, 65 year-old Mark Akkerman of Brandon, was not injured. Charges are pending.
