February 24, 2022

WATERTOWN, S.D.–Hugh Bartels announced today he’s filed petitions to run for the District 5 House seat in the South Dakota Legislature.

If re-elected, Bartels says it will be his  fourth and final term in Pierre. He is currently a Chair of the House Retirement Laws Committee, a member of the Executive Board of Legislature, and on the Education and Commerce and Energy Committees.

“South Dakota has done great over the last six years, especially the last two years. I believe that I and the other members of the Legislature have played a role in this success. I hope to continue making South Dakota the best State to live in.” He points to the State’s “open for business” reputation, the AAA credit rating and a balanced budget done without any gimmicks as key components that he wants to maintain and improve on.

Representative Bartels is a retired bank president. He was member of the Watertown School Board for nine years, President of the Watertown Chamber, Kiwanis board member and President, a church council member and treasurer, a Board member of South Dakota Bankers and Independent Community Bankers of South Dakota. He is currently on Board of Directors of Reliabank Dakota, Joy Ranch of South Dakota and The Village at Harmony Hill. He is an active member of Lutheran Church of our Redeemer.

South Dakota’s other House member in District 5, Republican Nancy York of Watertown, has already announced she will not be running for re-election in November.
