WATERTOWN, S.D.–The Watertown City Council got an update at their Tuesday work session on plans for a new Street Department building.

The city purchased 27 acres of land along  South Dakota Highway 20 for $1.2 million last year where it’ll be built. It’s where the South Dakota Livestock Auction Barn was located before it burned down.

Public Works Director Heath VonEye told the council what’s next as they prepare for construction…

VonEye says the project carries an estimated construction cost of just under $22 million. What he doesn’t know yet is how the city will pay for it….

VonEye says the project would be done in phases, with phase one construction starting next year on administrative space, heated storage for plows, and wash bays.

The second phase, consisting of cold vehicle storage, a salt and sand shed, and a brine mixing room, would come later.
