WATERTOWN, S.D.–Watertown Fire Rescue was called out to what they’re calling a large junk pit fire.

The call came in just after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire on 174th Street, just southwest of the city limits, involved a junk pit filled with years of construction debris, old tires and miscellaneous farm debris.

Firefighters hosed down the unburned material to help keep the fire contained.

Fire crews and property owners decided to turn it into a controlled burn and allow the one-fourth of the pit that was on fire to burn itself out.

A news release from Fire Rescue says the fire is likely to burn into today.
