UPDATE: South Dakota murder suspect makes first court appearance in south Texas

May 25, 2023

LAREDO, Tx.–The man charged with the murder of a Dakota Dunes woman last month made his first court appearance Wednesday morning in south Texas.

Alfredo Castellanos-Rosales appeared in a Laredo, Texas courtroom for an extradition hearing to determine whether he would be sent back to South Dakota to face charges of first- and second-degree murder. At the hearing, Castellanos-Rosales spoke through an interpreter and said he won’t fight his extradition from Texas.

He was arrested in Mexico on May 12, expelled from that country and placed into the custody of Texas law enforcement, who have been holding him without bond on the South Dakota murder charges. His expulsion came 16 days after 23-year-old Jordan Beardshear’s body was found inside her Dakota Dunes apartment.

Investigators say Beardshear died of “significant injuries” including stab wounds. Investigators say data from cell phones belonging to Beardshear and Castellanos- Rosales place the suspect at the crime scene when the murder took place.

Union County authorities have 30 days to pick him up from Texas and return him to South Dakota.
