UPDATE: Authorities release name of woman killed in crash near Groton

GROTON, S.D.–The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released the name of the woman killed in a traffic crash last week on U.S. Highway 12, five miles east of Groton.

 

Fifty year-old Melissa Sweeney of Fayetteville, North Carolina died when the car she was driving struck a deer, went off the highway and into a slough.

 

Sweeney was first airlifted to an Aberdeen hospital, then was transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital where she died.

 

Sweeney was alone in the vehicle.

 

The crash was reported on Monday July 11th at 1:10 a.m.
