Two dead when four wheeler crashes through thin ice on Lake Poinsett

LAKE POINSETT, S.D.–Tragedy on Lake Poinsett this weekend.

The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office says two people died when the ATV they were riding on broke through the ice on the lake.

Authorities receive a  911 call shortly after  6 p.m. Saturday. Codington County Search and Rescue, the Hamlin  County Sheriff’s Office, Game, Fish and Parks, South Dakota Highway Patrol and Lake Norden Ambulance were  among the agencies responding.

Two bodies were recovered.  The names of the 60 year-old man and eight year-old boy have not been released.

A short time later, authorities received a report of another four-wheeler and fish house that went though the ice on the northeast side of Lake Poinsett. No injuries were reported in that incident.
