PIERRE, S.D.–The South Dakota Legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee held a hearing Monday on the Department of Corrections (DOC) budget, but they also heard about safety concerns over the aging State Penitentiary.

The state is proposing to build a new $706 million penitentiary on state-owned land 4 1/2 miles south of Harrisburg.
The committee took no immediate action on the DOC budget or prison construction issues.
