WATERTOWN, S.D.–The city of Watertown has finalized the purchase of a vacant piece of land that will become the new home of Street Department operations.

Two weeks ago, the council voted to buy 27 acres of property on South Dakota Highway 20, where the South Dakota Livestock Auction barn was located.

The barn burned down 6-1/2 years ago, and the property has been vacant since then.

But in their purchase agreement, the city council wanted it to be contingent upon an environmental study that would show the land suitable to build on.

That contingency has been removed now. City Attorney Matt Roby explains what transpired over the past two weeks…

Roby says the city now knows the land is suitable to build on…

The city is buying the land for $1.2 million. The purchase will close no later than March 25th.
