WATERTOWN, S.D.–When Watertown’s new two-sheet ice arena opens in 2023, it could be the home arena for a North American Hockey League (NAHL) team.

The Watertown City Council will vote tomorrow (Monday) night on a letter of intent between the city and the league.

The letter of intent indicates the two parties would work together in good faith to seek a junior hockey team to operate in Watertown, with a targeted start date of April 1, 2023.

The letter of intent says the city would use, “its best reasonable efforts to provide a minimum of forty weekend home dates for the NAHL team.

The NAHL is the only Tier II junior league sanctioned by USA Hockey.

Players in the league are working toward attracting Division One College Hockey scholarship offers, and potentially a professional career.
