Minnesota Republican want statewide vote on new state flag, seal

ST. PAUL, Minn.–A bill in the Minnesota legislature supported by a group of Republican lawmakers would put Minnesota’s new state flag and seal designs to a public vote this fall.
Senator Steve Drazkowski of Mazeppa said if the public gives thumbs-down to the new designs, it’s back to the drawing board on the state flag (pictured) and seal.
Secretary of State Steve Simon has said that a public vote wouldn’t be constitutional because Minnesota doesn’t have initiative and referendum and the only statewide votes are for candidates or for amendments to the Minnesota Constitution.
