MOORETON, N.D. (KFGO) – The Highway Patrol has released the names of two people killed in a multi-vehicle crash early Monday morning on North Dakota Highway 13, a quarter-mile west of Interstate 29.

The driver of a car, 45-year-old Rory Campbell of Wahpeton, got stuck in snow along the shoulder of the highway. The driver of a pickup, 51-year-old Gerald Wolter of Mantador, stopped and was starting to attach a tow rope to the car when another pickup approached.

Campbell was assisting when the driver of the other pickup struck the car and the pedestrians, killing Campbell and Wolter.

Mooreton Fire Chief Brandon Ward said firefighters responded to the call shortly before 6 a.m.

Two others were transported to a hospital, one by AirMed and another by ambulance.

Ward said as the fire crew arrived, two passersby had already stopped and were performing life-saving measures for several of the injured.

State Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind said many of the roads in that area are ice and snow compacted. The cause is under investigation.
