Lincoln County Commissioners supporting lawsuit over proposed prison site

CANTON, S.D.–The Lincoln County Commission has agreed to support a lawsuit filed by landowners against South Dakota over the site of a proposed new men’s prison.
The formed group called “NOPE” (Neighbors Opposed to Prison Expansion) has criticized the state for its lack of transparency in the selection of the site between Harrisburg and Canton.
A 3-1 vote Tuesday approved an amicus brief for more information and possible court action.
Lincoln County commissioners will ask the court to require the state to follow the county’s planning and zoning process.
