Grass fire north of Elkton burns 100 acres

ELKTON, S.D.–These are dangerous times to be doing any burning, with no snow cover, low relative humidity, dry grass and wind.
Those factors all combined to let a controlled burn get out of control in Brookings County Sunday.
Fire crews from Elkton, Aurora, White and Brookings all responded to a report of a grass fire north of Elkton.
A property owner had been burning trash several hours before the fire call came in. The resident observed the fire be be out before he left the area, only to return and find it had reignited and spread into a nearby grass field.
About 100 acres of grassland burned in the fire, which was reported at 4 p.m Sunday.
