WATERTOWN, S.D.–Staffers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha office were in Watertown Tuesday night to host a meeting on flood mitigation.

The Corps launched a $1.8 million study last August on ways to hold back the Big Sioux River in the Watertown area during times of flooding.

Drew Minert is a planner with the Corps of Engineers….

Watertown Public Works Director Heath VonEye says the solution could involve several different features…

VonEye says the Corps is going into the study with a, “clean slate,” and their eyes, “wide open”…..

Minert says any actual construction on a flood control project could be 8 to 10 years away.

Watertown has had 11 major flood events on the Big Sioux River since 1943.
