Drugged driving arrests in Minnesota nearly double

September 19, 2023

ST. PAUL, Minn. – New numbers show drugged driving arrests nearly doubled in Minnesota between 2018 and 2022.

Mike Hanson with the Office of Traffic Safety said more people are using substances other than alcohol before driving. He points to the meth and opioid problems in Minnesota and said law enforcement is becoming much better at recognizing and then being able to process those arrests.

Hanson said not one single drug is behind the increase and some prescription medications impair your ability to drive.

Using grant money, the state has recently expanded the number of drug recognition evaluator officers on Minnesota roads.
