March 27, 2024

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation, in collaboration with the City of Brookings, Brookings County, and Moody County, will hold a public meeting open house from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11th.

The public meeting will be held at the Brookings City and County Government Center located at 520 3rd Street in Brookings. The purpose of the public meeting is to present the proposed Interstate 29 Variable Speed Limit Corridor project to the public and gather input. The project corridor includes Interstate 29 from exit 114 to exit 133 in Brookings and Moody Counties.

The public meeting open house, which will be held in community room 300, will be informal allowing for one-on-one discussion with the design team. A short presentation will take place at 5:45 p.m. After the presentation, the design team and Department of Transportation staff will be available with displays to discuss the proposed project and answer questions. Area commuters are encouraged to attend to participate in the discussion.

The opportunity to present written comments will be provided at the public meeting. Written comments on the public meeting will be accepted until Thursday, April 25th.

Variable speed limits corridors use programmable speed limit signs that change to slow drivers to avoid creating heavy traffic congestion. Sensors along the roadway can detect when congestion or weather conditions are dangerous, and thus speed limits are reduced.
