WATERTOWN, S.D.–Nearly the entire interstate highway system in South Dakota is closed today due to blizzard conditions.

On Thursday, the South Dakota DOT closed Interstate 90 between Sioux Falls and Rapid City, and later extended the closure even further, from Rapid City to the Minnesota line.

Thursday night at six o’clock, the DOT closed Interstate 29 from Sioux Falls to the North Dakota line.

That means the only stretches of interstate that are OPEN in South Dakota are I-29 from Sioux Falls to the Iowa border, and I-90 from Rapid City to the Wyoming line.

The DOT is strongly discouraging people from using other state highways and secondary roads as an alternate route. They say those highways are in as bad of shape, or even worse, than the closed stretches of the interstates.
