WATERTOWN, S.D.–One of the summer study topics lawmakers will address prior to next year’s legislative session is correctional facilities, which includes needs from the state prison level, down to county jails.

Codington County Sheriff Brad Howell tells KWAT News he’s glad to see lawmakers tackling this issue, and he’ll be watching the talks with interest…

Although aging and rather small, a regional jail is something Watertown has right now…

Howell says less than half of South Dakota’s 66 counties currently have their own jail.

The committee that will study correctional facility needs in South Dakota will be chaired by Senator Mike Diedrich of Rapid City, with Representative Greg Jamison of Sioux Falls serving as vice chair.
