Burgum seeks disaster declaration due to ice storm damage

January 31, 2024

BISMARCK, N.D.–North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has requested a presidential major disaster declaration for severe ice storm damage.

The ice storm hit North Dakota over the Christmas weekend last year, leaving roads coated with ice, bringing down trees, and causing major damage to utility infrastructure across the state.

In a letter to President Joe Biden, Burgum called the event “the worst ice storm since 1997 for much of eastern North Dakota”.

If the disaster declaration is approved, it would allow for FEMA public assistance to help pay for the costs of repairing the damage.
