Wheelborg leads Tiger golfers at Southern Plains Collegiate

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (DWUAthletics.com) – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s and women’s golf teams competed against some of the best competition in the region on Monday and Tuesday in the Southern Plains Collegiate hosted by Oklahoma City University. The women’s team took second place and the men’s team finished in eighth at the Gaillardia Country Club in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Tiger women played 18 holes each day as they finished in second place after carding a 350 on the opening day, while improving by 25 strokes on the second day to finish with a 325.
Megan Hinker (Lennox, S.D.) paced the women as she took sixth following a two-day total of 159 on her scorecard. After tallying an 83 on the first day, Hinker improved by seven strokes in the second day to record a 76.
Ronae Klein (Winner, S.D.) and Ashley Zimmer (Mitchell, S.D.) finished ninth and 10th, respectively. Klein finished the two days with a 166, while Zimmer posted a 173 through two rounds.
Brooke Ehlers (Worthing, S.D.) and Jordan Glanzer (Howard, S.D.) were not far behind as they finished in 12th and 13th, respectively. Each recorded a 92 on their opening round, but Ehlers improved by seven strokes, as Glanzer progressed by five strokes.
Out of 11 teams, the DWU men’s squad finished in eighth place after recording a 928 through three rounds. They competed against some of the toughest competition in the area with Southwestern Christian University and Bellevue University tying for first with an 865. The men’s teams played 36 holes on Monday and played 18 holes on Tuesday.
Leading the way for the Tigers was sophomore Devan Weelborg (Bryant, S.D.) as he tied for 17th. He finished with a three-round total of 226, with his best effort coming in the first round, posting a 74 on his scorecard.
Bennett Lundy (Aberdeen, S.D.) finished 10 spots behind his teammate as he tied for 27th with a 232. Not far behind was senior Cade Carpenter (Mitchell, S.D.) who tied for 35th. He improved each round with his best score being a 75 on the final day.
Payton Phares (Rapid City, S.D.) also had an impressive final outing as he tied for 37th with a 238 final score, thanks to a 77 in the final round. Freshman Jack Brinkman (Jackson, Minn.) rounded out the group as he tied for 45th with a final scorecard total of 243.
Both teams compete at the Morningside Invite from Sunday through Tuesday at the Willow Creek Country Club in Le Mars, Iowa.
