WEDNESDAY UPDATE: South Dakota reports five new COVID-19 deaths; active cases drop below 800 statewide

PIERRE, S.D.—South Dakota’s death toll from the COVID-19 virus grew to 29 on Wednesday.
That’s an increase of five from the previous day. All of the deaths occurred in residents of Minnehaha County.
The State Health Department reports 72 South Dakotans are currently hospitalized with the virus.
Statewide, a total of 2,779 cases have been reported. Of that number, 1,977 people, or 71-percent have recovered. The number of active cases in the state is currently 773.
A week ago, it was 868.
In northeast South Dakota, there are currently eight active cases in Day County, six in Roberts, two in Grant, two in Codington and 44 in Brown County.
Eighty six percent of all positive cases in South Dakota have occurred in Minnehaha (2,231) and Lincoln (170) counties.
