WATERTOWN, S.D.–Gas prices have been on a quick and steep climb upward in the past week.

Triple-A says the nationwide average for a gallon of regular unleaded is at $3.45 a gallon today. A week ago, the average was $3.37 a gallon. A month ago it was $3.30 a gallon, and a year ago, it was $2.46 a gallon.

South Dakota prices have been on a similar path. The statewide average is $3.31 a gallon, compared to $3.24 a gallon a week ago, $3.14 a gallon a month ago, and $2.39 a gallon a year ago.

In Watertown, some stations have raised their price 25 cents a gallon within the last week, from $3.14 a gallon to today’s $3.39 a gallon.

One analyst, Patrick DeHaan, said, “refiners will be switching back to more expensive summer gasoline, adding in to an increase in demand as the temperatures start to warm. So if nothing else, geopolitical tensions and normal seasonal trends will push gas prices up more significantly starting in March and lasting through Memorial Day, when the national average could reach that $4 mark.”
