WATERTOWN, S.D. —When the 1,500 seat, $36 million Prairie Lakes Ice Arena in Watertown opens in just over a year, it’s hoped that it will be the home rink for a North American Hockey League (NAHL)  team.

The NAHL is a feeder program of sorts for college hockey teams, as players polish their skills while retaining their amateur status.

Watertown City Manager Amanda Mack says they’re in the early stages of trying to acquire an NAHL team….

The ice arena will have two regulation sized rinks, along with lobby space, suites and locker rooms.

Mack says the city will need to hire someone to manage it all…

Construction on the arena starts in a few weeks, with a planned opening date in October 2023.
