WATERTOWN, S.D.–Watertown police are investigating a report of counterfeit money being passed at Dunham’s in the Watertown Mall Monday.

Police Captain Kirk Ellis four bogus $20 bills were involved.

Ellis says the U.S. Secret Service agency investigates reports of counterfeit currency, so evidence will be collected and information on this case will be forwarded to the Secret Service office in Sioux Falls.

Ellis says retailers need to be observant of the bills they’re being handed. He says in this particular case, the counterfeit money look authentic, but the paper was thicker than legitimate U.S. currency.
