WATERTOWN, S.D.–The Watertown Police Department is participating in a national campaign to enforce texting and distracted driving laws.

The campaign is led by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and is called, “U Drive, U Text, U Pay.”

Watertown Police Officer Amy Beyl says distracted driving has become a major problem, and nationally, the number of lives lost, indicates just how bad it is…..

Beyl says when you get right down to it, distracted driving is not all that different from drunken driving….

Statistics show drivers in the 15 to 20 year-old age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted at the time of fatal crashes.

The “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” enforcement campaign runs from now through April 10th.
