Watertown goes 4-1 at Gopher Classic, moves on to round of 16

VICTORIA, M.N. (GoWatertown.net) – Watertown Post 17 would go 4-1 in the Victoria Pool of the Gopher Classic over the weekend.

The purple and gold would fall on Friday to Burnsville, Minnesota 5-4. Ben Althoff, Jerod Cyrus, and Carson Mutschler each had one of Watertown’s three hits in the game. Andrew Czech went six innings on the mound allowing eight hits, five runs, fanning five, and walking two.

Game two of Friday would see Watertown defeat Wayzata, Minnesota 2-1. Cyrus pitched the complete game going seven innings allowing two hits, one run, giving three free passes and accumulating five K’s.

Game one of Saturday would see Watertown down Papillion, Nebraska 10-2 in six innings. Post 17 would send five runs past the plate in the sixth inning. Drew Denzer had a two-hit, three-RBI afternoon. Jerod Maag pitched the complete game allowing four hits, two runs, walking four and striking out three.

The final game of Saturday would see Watertown send Rapid City Post 315 packing in five innings, 9-1. Jack Heesch, Braedon Zaug, Will Engstrom, and Denzer each had two-hit afternoons. Marcus Rabine tossed the complete game allowing two hits, one run, giving out three free passes while fanning five.

A two-run fifth inning was enough for Watertown to escape with a 2-1 win over Maple Plain-Orono, Minnesota in the final game on Sunday at the Victoria Pool of the Gopher Classic. Engstrom and Denzer had both of Post 17’s hits. Heesch pitched the complete game allowing five hits, and collecting nine K’s,

Watertown (18-32) have advanced out of pool play and will move to the round of 16 where they will face Millard West at 11:30 a.m. today.

Watertown Junior Legion went 2-1 at the Fargo Tournament fallingCasselton 10-6 on Friday and defeating Fargo Post 2 7-0 and the Bismarck Representatives 11-10. Next up for Watertown (27-13) JL faces Marshall, Minnesota July 14th.
