SOUTH SHORE, S.D.–Watertown Fire Rescue was dispatched just after six o’clock Monday night to assist the South Shore Fire Department in getting a grass fire under control.

South Shore requested mutual aid from Watertown due to the rapid spread of the fire and the need for additional equipment and manpower.

Watertown Fire Rescue responded with a brush truck and water truck, and were able to get the south-moving fire under control.

Once they had the fire contained, crews remained on the scene mopping up hot spots and soaking down a small grove of trees.

The fire started when a controlled burn by a local landowner got out of control due to high winds.

Watertown Fire Rescue was on the scene for an hour-and-a-half.

This morning, Codington County Commissioners meet to discuss implementing a burn ban in the county.
