WATERTOWN, S.D.–When the Watertown City Council approved a license for County Fair Foods to sell beer and wine earlier this summer, Mayor Ried Holien told KWAT News it would, “open the floodgates” for other retailers to apply too, and that’s exactly what’s happening.

At a meeting earlier this month, the council approved a beer and wine license for Hy-Vee Inc., and now another major retailer in the city has jumped into the application line.

The Watertown City Council meeting agenda for Monday night includes an application for a Malt Beverage and South Dakota Farm Wine License for Walmart Inc., doing business as Walmart #1500 at 1201 29th Street Southeast in Watertown.

The application is dated September 28th, and was submitted by David Reading, who is an assistant secretary at Walmart’s corporate level.

Watertown’s Walmart store is in the C-3 Highway Commercial District, where the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption is allowed.
