WATERTOWN, S.D.–More details have been released about an incident at Sioux Valley High School in Volga Tuesday morning that led to a “shelter in place” order for students and staff.
School District Superintendent Laura Schuster says a high school student, “brought a knife to school with the intent of instilling fear in others.”
The student wielded the knife in a classroom where two staff members were present, but no students were in the room at the time.
Schuster says staff members were able to remove themselves from the room unharmed. Law enforcement was contacted and took the unnamed student into custody.
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office credits Sioux Valley staff for their quick thinking, which greatly aided in keeping the school safe and bringing the student into custody.
