WATERTOWN, S.D.–The Watertown Police Department conducted tobacco compliance checks at five businesses Thursday, and three of the five failed.

Captain Kirk Ellis says businesses that passed the compliance checks were I-29 Shell, and Casey’s on 19th Street.

Businesses that failed by selling tobacco products to someone under the age of 21 were County Fair Foods, Stone’s Truck Stop and Dakota Tobacco. The clerks at those stores who sold the products were issued a citation for providing tobacco to someone under the age of 21.

Watertown police remind local retailers that the legal age to purchase or possess tobacco products is 21.
