WATERTOWN, S.D. – A teenage girl is dead after drowning in the James River.
Spink County Sheriff Frank Krumm tells KWAT News his office got the call around 9:00 p.m. Friday.
He says initial reports were of two girls swimming in the river about nine miles south of Frankfort.
He says law enforcement arrived and rescued one of the girls, but her 13 year-old friend went under and did not resurface.
Krumm says the victim’s body was recovered at 9:25 Saturday morning about 50 yards downstream from where she was last seen.
The girls were members of a local Hutterite Colony. Their names are not being released.
Krumm says the sheriff’s department was assisted by Game Fish and Parks, the Frankfort and Redfield fire departments, Redfield Ambulance, the Huron Dive Team and Spink County Emergency Management.
