Summit submits new application for carbon capture pipeline in South Dakota

November 19, 2024

AMES, Iowa–Summit Carbon Solutions has announced it has submitted another permit application to the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) for its proposed carbon capture pipeline.

The 2,500-mile pipeline, including 700 miles in South Dakota, would transport CO2 from 57 ethanol plants across five states, including 14 in South Dakota, and Gevo’s planned sustainable aviation fuel plant near Lake Preston.

A statement from Summit says, “the application highlights major reroutes (of the pipeline) in Spink, Brown, McPherson, and Lincoln Counties, along with numerous micro-adjustments, resulting from more than a year of one-on-one work with landowners to find mutually agreeable solutions.”

Summit’s application was denied once previously by the PUC.

Just last week, authorities in North Dakota approved Summit’s pipeline route in that state.

Pipeline opponents cite safety concerns, damage to farmland and property values, and an infringement on property rights.

If the necessary permits are required, Summit says it would begin construction work on the pipeline in early 2026, and have it operational by 2027.
