WATERTOWN, S.D.–There will be a lot of blaze orange across the countryside of South Dakota this weekend.

The resident-only pheasant hunting season begins tomorrow (Saturday) and runs through Monday.

The youth-only season is already over. That started September 26th and ended October 4th.

The season for everyone—resident and non-resident hunters—opens October 17th and runs through January 31st.

The Game, Fish and Parks Department says even on a “down” year, South Dakota’s pheasant harvest is consistently double, if not triple surrounding pheasant hunting states.

While many states average roughly 3.5 to 5.0 birds per hunter, South Dakota averaged about eight birds per hunter between 2014 and 2018.
