South Dakota inmate sentenced for possession of contraband

May 10, 2023

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.–An Oklahoma man has been sentenced in South Dakota on charges of failing to register as a sex offender, and possession of contraband by an inmate.

U.S. Attorney Alison Ramsdell says 37 year-old Charles Nathaniel Graves was sentenced Monday to three-and-a-half years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.

On the contraband charge, Ramsdell says Graves was in federal custody at the Yankton County Jail in March 2022 when he was granted a furlough to attend a funeral.

When he returned to jail, he was told he would have to submit to a full body scan.

Before the scan could occur, Graves removed a small package that he had inserted into his rectum.

The package tested positive for slightly more than five grams of methamphetamine.
