South Dakota House Committee hears updated census data

January 10, 2024

PIERRE, S.D.–According to a presentation before the House State Affairs Committee today (Wednesday), South Dakota’s population has been growing over the past three to four decades, but with unequal growth across the state.

That’s according to Weiwei Zhang, state demographer and associate professor at SDSU.

The latest census data shows South Dakota’s population is over 900,000, or 1.6% more than in 2021.

South Dakota’s growth in the past decade is slightly above the national average, with an 8.9% increase.

If combined, Sioux Falls and Rapid City make up about 47% of the entire state population.

The median age in South Dakota is 38.
