South Dakota Democrats choose slate of statewide candidates for fall elections

July 11, 2022

FORT PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota Democrats picked their candidate in what they hope will be a winnable race for secretary of state but opted not to name a challenger for state attorney general.

The delegates to the state convention chose former journalist Tom Cool, who ran for auditor in 2018, to challenge Republican Monae Johnson, who beat out incumbent Secretary of State Steve Barnett.

Johnson has focused her campaign on ensuring election integrity.

Other Democrat Party nominees for the November elections included State Representative Jennifer Keintz of Eden for Lieutenant Governor, John Cunningham of Sioux Falls for State Treasurer, Minnehaha County Commissioner Jeff Barth for Public Utilities Commissioner, Tim Azure of Wessington Springs for Commissioner of School and Public Lands, and Stephanie Marty of Sioux Falls for State Auditor.

Election Day is November 8th.
