Self defense bill signed by Governor

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) — Among the bills signed by South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem this week was HB1212, which is titled “to clarify the use of force.”

Representative Caleb Finck of Tripp was a co-sponsor and says the bill came from self defense instructors:

Finck says the bill builds on previous self defense legislation:

Some have called the bill a version of “stand your ground” but Finck doesn’t think it should be taken that way:

The bill passed in the House on a vote of sixty-one to seven, then killed in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill was smoked out to the Senate floor and passed on a vote of twenty-one to fourteen.
