WATERTOWN, S.D.–Codington County Sheriff Brad Howell says over the past year, 1,060 weapons, or items that could be used as weapons, have been turned away from people going through security screening at the county courthouse.

The sheriff says the types of items being turned away are quite varied….

He says screening for weapons at a courthouse used to be the exception, but nowadays it’s the rule….

Howell says the weapons are not confiscated. Instead, the security screener asks the individual to return it to their vehicle, and then re-enter the courthouse.
