SD House Committee defeats bill to fund new community centers
January 26, 2024
PIERRE, S.D.–Members of the South Dakota House Local Government Committee expressed concern over funding community centers due to the need to save for a new $130 million men’s prison
The committee killed two bills requesting state funds for community centers in Whitewood and Lead.
The Bureau of Finance and Management’s Duncan Koch argued against funding community centers, saying it sets a precedent–and the need to save money for the proposed men’s prison in Lincoln County.
Proponents of the community centers argued for the need for new facilities, citing daycare and after-school programs
The committee sent bills for the new community centers to the 41st legislative day, effectively killing them.
