Sanford, Fairview Health agree to push back proposed merger date

February 13, 2023

ST. PAUL, Minn.–The Sanford and Fairview health systems have agreed to push back finalizing their proposed merger until May 31 after meeting with the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office Friday.

It comes just hours after University of Minnesota Board of Regents Chair Ken Powell called on the two health systems to disclaim their March 31 merger deadline, and disavow statements that they’ll proceed with or without the University.

Fairview owns the University of Minnesota’s teaching hospital, which trains 70 percent of the doctors in Minnesota, who go on to serve in hospitals and clinics in all corners of the state.

The decision to push back the closing date on the proposed merger comes after weeks of pressure from the University of Minnesota, state Attorney General Keith Ellison and some lawmakers.
